Bombay Gymkhana established in 1875 is one of the premier gymkhanas (sports arena) in Mumbai. It is in South Mumbai. It was designed by English architect Mr. Claude Batley. It was originally built as a British-only club.
The gymkhana lies on the southern end of the Azad Maidan. M.G. Road and H. Somal Marg are the two roads on either side of the Azad maidan whereon the gymkhana is situated. It has pathway through the ground of Azad Maidan which is making shortway accessing to Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Stations.
Bombay Gymkhana is consisted of table tennis, badminton court, restaurant and lounge. It has also swimming facility at the southern end.
This was a major centre for the erstwhile Bombay Pentangular cricket matches. Cricket is played here in the winter and rugby & football in the monsoon seasons. The ground hosts the national rugby competition. The ground had hosted India's first Test cricket match on 15/12/1933 under the captainship of late Mr. C.K. Naidu.
Until few years ago, only men could gain membership of the club. Woman membeship was allowed from the early 2000s. The Bombay Gymkhana is one of the most exclusive clubs in the city with the long waiting period to be its member and the fees being charged are in the millions of rupees.
