The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi in South Mumbai. The oval shaped ground with a 2400 m straight chute, spread over approx. 325 acres of open land in the heart of Mumbai City is very popular amongst the elite class of Mumbai, who come here to watch horse races and bet on the magnificent horses. It was created a hundred years ago. The centre of the racecourse is consisted of Polo Ground.
The horse racing season on the Mahalakshmi Racecourse is from mid November to February. The Derby is organized every year on the first Sunday of February.
The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a replica of the Melbourne Racecourse. The ground is run by the Royal Western India Turf Club. It is on lease from the Muncipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
The common public have access to the racecourse in the morning and evening for exercising, jogging and walking in the inner lane of the main race track during specific timings. Hence, the Mahalaxmi racecourse is not a fully gambling sports venue for elite class of people as it is generally depicted but it is also one of the rare natural forested environments for the general public in polluted and congested Mumbai. During the monsoon season, its adjoining area gets overgrown with grass attracting number of aquatic birds and hence, it becomes paradise for bird watchers.
