Bhau Daji Lad Museum


Bhau Daji Lad Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai. The story began in the 1840s when East India Company started ruling Bombay. Dr. Buist, a collector conceived the idea of having a museum in Bombay. He was gradually able to create the Central Museum for Natural History, Economy, Geology, Industry and Arts. Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay Presidency, was among its early patrons. In 1855, the museum had funds of Rs 6,000.
Ramkrishna Vitthal Lad, known as Bhau Daji Lad conceived the idea of erecting a new building for housing this collection. The museum started as the Central Museum of Economic Products which was named as the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1862.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation then as Bombay Municipal Corporation managing this museum decided to rename it in 1975 as Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum. The Museum is in Jijamata Udyan near Byculla Station.
