The Wankhede Stadium is the largest cricket stadium in Mumbai near Churchgate station. Brabourne Stadium ceased to be a major venue for international matches after a dispute between Cricket Club of India(CCI), the owner of Brabourn Stadium and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) over the allotment of tickets. The MCA then built its own cricket stadium, the Wankhede Stadium, a few hundred metres to the north of the Brabourne Stadium at the initiative of Mr.S. K. Wankhede, a politician and then secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association. It was built only within six months and opened in time for the final Test between India and the West Indies which was played, Jan 23-29, 1975. Since then the Wankhade stadium has taken over from Brabourne Stadium as the main cricketing venue in the city. The stadium has a capacity of about 45,000 audiences hosting an international cricket matches in India.
Wankhede Stadium was upgraded in the year 1995 to host even night cricket matches.
The cricket pitch of Wankhade Stadium is favorite for spin bowlers because of its close proximity to the sea which ensurs spin and bounce to the spinners on the ground.
