The Bandra Worli Sea Link is 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete linking
Bandra and Worli for connecting the western suburbs of Mumbai with central Mumbai. It is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system which will enable to save travel time of about one hour. The project worth Rs. 1600 crore was initiated by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The contract of construction was awarded to M/S Hindustan Construction Company and its foreign partner, China Harbour Engineering Corporation.
The Mahim Causeway was the only link connecting the western suburbs of Mumbai with Central Mumbai causing traffic jam.
Access is controlled on the Worli end by toll plazas on the Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road, and on the Bandra end by toll plazas at Love Grove Junction.

The toll on the sea link would be collected for 30 years. The toll would be Rs 50 for passenger vehicle and Rs 75 for light commercial vehicle. The two and three wheeler vehicles are not allowed to ply over this bridge.
The Bandra Cable Stay section of the BWSL spans 600 m in length and towers to a height of 126 m (equivalent to a 43 storied building). The Cable Stay system comprises 2,250 km of high strength galvanized steel wires supporting the Cable Stay Bridge weighing 20,000 ton. The Bandra Worli Sea Link is one of the most complex and advanced construction projects in India.

The Bandra Sea Link was inaugurated at 15.00 hrs(IST) on 30/06/2005 by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, President, Indian Congress Party, one of the major political parties in India which is presently ruling at the centre and in the State of Maharashtra. The bridge was opened for the general public at 12.00 mid night on the same day. It took 10 years to complete.
