Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Though officially known as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, it is better known as the Borivali National Park. It is the largest Park in the world within city limits. The ancient Kanheri Caves dating 2,400 years back were crafted out of the rocky within the Park,. The park has a rich flora and fauna. Sopara and Kalyan were the two ports in the close vicinity of parkthat traded with ancient lands such like Greece and Mesopotamia. The routes between these two ports traversed through this forest. The Park was named Krishnagiri National Park in the pre-independence era. The Park was renamed Borivli National Park after the nearby Borivali area which is still largely known. In 1981, the name was again changed as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, after Sanjay Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi (late prime minister of India) who died in an airplane accident.
