Trombay

Trombay (also called as Turbhe in local Marathi language) is a North eastern suburb of Mumbai. It is accesible from Mankhurd which is the closest railway station on the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railways.
The original inhabitants of Trombay are fisher men due to its proximity to the the Arabian Sea(Vashi creek). The place Pailipada near Trombay Village is also very old having one of the oldest masjid in Mumbai. Pailipada has majority of muslim population. Later in 1976 Janata Colony area relocated by known as Cheeta Camp. Cheeta Camp is the most densely populated part of Trombay. As Chembur started expanding, people started moving to Trombay in search of a quieter lifestyle.
The Indian Navy has set up a small base here for administrative purposes. This area housed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC), Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.(BPCL) and Food Corporation of India(FCI).
In the 1980s, BARC got its act together and relocated several thousand inhabitants from its residential colony to a place in Trombay called Cheeta Camp located with a hill on one side and Arabian Sea on the other.
Trombay has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by Tamilians and Maharashtrians followed by Keralites, Punjabis, Sindhis and Gujaratis. However, the majority of the population is South Indias.
