View:- Oval Maidan(Oval Ground)
The Oval Maidan is a large Grade I recreational ground situated in South Mumbai. It is named because of its oval shape and is located just south of Churchgate railway station, in the most expensive part of the city:- South Mumbai. It is a popular recreation ground. The popular games being played there are cricket and football (soccer). The ground measures 22 acres (0.089 sq km) in area. The government does not allow rallies in the maidan.
The ground was owned and run by the state government and was very poorly maintained till 1997. It was frequented by beggars, prostitutes and drug peddlers. In 1997, a public charitable trust named OCRA (Oval-Cooperage Residents Association) was set up by the residents of the area which petitioned the Maharashtra government to maintain the Oval maidan. The Maharashtra government did not respond to the petition. Hence, the OCRA had to take up the matter to the Bombay High Court. The Court ruled that either the government to maintain the maidan or to hand it over to ORCA. The ground was subsequently handed over to the ORCA.
The ORCA then fenced the ground and built a jogging track around the periphery.
