Elphinstone College in Mumbai is one of the oldest colleges in the University of Mumbai system, and indeed in all of India. It was established in 1824 and formally constituted in 1835. In 1835, two Elphinstone professors opened classes distinct from the school. In 1840, the professors' classes were amalgamated with the Society's School to form the Elphinstone Native Education Institution. In 1945, the name was shortened to Elphinstone Institution. Elphinstone College was recognised by the Bombay University (now known as University of Mumbai) in 1860. It was named after Hon. Mountstuart Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay from 1819 to 1827.
The college is located in the Kala Ghoda area of Mumbai.
